Great Auk

Ahh... The Great Auk...

Even though they have a similar look to a razorbill, who can still be found at coastal breeding sites spread across the UK, greak auks are close to twice the size of them. Great auks are flightless birds, and even though they're a very different family, were essentially the penguins of the Northern Hemisphere. They lived in large colonies across the North Atalantic, in just a small amount of sites such as St Kilda, in the Outer Hebridges.

Why did they go extinct?

The great auks went extinct as their eggs were harvested and they were killed for their skin and meat. Because they were flightless they were simple to gathered on beaches and ledges of rocky islands. The last great auk in the UK was killed in 1840, and only four years later they became globally extinct.
