The Wolf

The supposed 'big bad wolf'...

Yes that's right, the wolves you thought were just in fairy tales actually did exist in the UK! Thousands of years ago they feasted on a range of animals such as bison, aurochs, antelopes, deer, as long as they were mammals living in open grasslands and woods the wolves would eat them. It has been suggested through their remains found in caves that the wolf was domesticated as a pet for protection and to assist humans with hunting. Unlike dogs, the wolf's ancestor, they were not tolerated and were eventually killed off.

Why did they become extinct?

Wolves were persecuted to extinction by the 1760s in the United Kingdom. Not to mention deforrestation aided in their extinction as there was no where for them to hide from the bounty hunters.

Are wolves being reintroduced to the UK?

Even though there has been promising research into bringing them back to the Scottish highlands, the wolf will not be seen wondering around the UK anytime soon, due to society not being prepared for them. Wolves have had a long history of being demonised and mythologised (Ted Hughes is a great example of this). This creates a problem as if the government was to licence the reintroduction they'd appropriately have to seek consultation from the general public, not to mention ensuring that they'd have an apt habitat there.
